IT generalist vs specialist

An IT generalist is a person who works in several IT fields that a larger company gives to separate specialists: software, data, servers, the website and the AI tools of the staff. An IT specialist knows one field in depth, such as security or databases. The generalist knows how the fields connect and where their own knowledge ends.

What an IT generalist does

A generalist takes a task from the requirement to the running system. The same person writes the concept, builds the software, sets up the server and explains the result to management. The task does not pass between four contractors. A question from management reaches someone who knows the whole system.

In a smaller company one person holds these fields. That works when this person says at the start which part of a task needs a specialist.

IT generalist vs specialist: the difference

IT generalistIT specialist
KnowledgeSeveral fields and how they connectOne field in depth
Typical taskA system from the requirement to operationOne part of a system, such as a penetration test
Fits a companywhose IT has many fields and little work in eachin which one field fills a full position
LimitHands on the work that needs depth in one fieldNeeds someone who sees the whole system

The question which of the two is better has no general answer. The amount of work per field decides. A native app for iOS and Android is specialist work. So is a statistical forecast model trained on the data of the company.

When a company needs an IT generalist

Four questions help with the decision whom to hire.

  • Does one field, such as security or data analysis, keep a person busy full time? Then the company hires a specialist for that field.
  • Do the IT tasks pass between two or more outside providers, and does nobody see the whole? Then a generalist can take over the whole of it.
  • Does management need someone who answers for the IT budget and explains IT decisions? Then the company looks for a generalist with leadership experience.
  • Does the company plan a new system, such as a customer portal or a data platform? Then it looks for a generalist who builds systems and runs them.

Many companies need both. The generalist writes down what the specialist has to deliver. Both work on the system until the result runs.

My work as an IT generalist

I am Michael Wutzke, an IT expert for data platforms. For more than twenty years I have worked on both sides of a system: the code and the server it runs on. I go deepest in data and software. I cover servers, the website and AI tools myself as well.

At a Frankfurt fintech I wrote the concept of a market data product and coordinated the teams that built it. As CIO of that company I held the IT budget. At an insurance company in Frankfurt I programmed the front end of a contract management portal in Angular and connected it to the existing CRM. I ran the servers of that portal, and I discussed the system with the chief actuary and with marketing.

Today Claude and Codex write much of my code, under rules that a machine checks. That speeds up my work across the fields. My part is the data model and the review of the results.

Where a task needs a specialist, I say so at the start. For each field, I name which work I do myself and which work I hand on. My work describes the systems I built and ran in these fields. I support companies as a freelancer or as a permanent employee.
