At a glance

I have been in web development for more than 20 years. I program in around a dozen programming and scripting languages (frontend, backend, and the shell). My tools are Windows and Linux computers, but I also worked on a Mac for 5 years.

In recent years my work has focused especially on mobile apps and online shops. Besides my technical IT skills, I have extensive knowledge of sales, marketing, management, and design. Together, this knowledge makes me an IT all-rounder who can talk with all kinds of people involved in a project.

Programming skills

For me, web programming is always more than the implementation of a design someone has. Today I develop websites and apps using a variety of programming languages. My strengths are the frontend, which I develop using HTML, CSS and JavaScript, and all the aspects involved in creating successful web projects or apps. I program with frameworks like jQuery and Angular on a daily basis.

In the backend I use PHP/Symfony and Microsoft .NET. I also have senior-level experience with databases such as MySQL, Postgres and SQL Server. My server environments are Linux servers and Windows servers, which I also set up and manage. For managing code I use Git/GitFlow, often in combination with software like GitHub and JIRA.

What software do you use?

I work on a variety of platforms. I do my own programming on a Windows system, and the applications usually run on Linux servers.

How long have you been programming?

I started programming at the age of 15 using Basic and Assembler on Amiga computers. Later, I switched to PCs and started to program in Pascal at school. Between 1990 and 1997 I actively used modems and ran mailboxes to exchange data. In 1997 I learned ColdFusion, and some years later I switched to PHP. From 2012, I became a frontend specialist using jQuery, Bootstrap and HTML5. In 2019 I began to use Angular and .NET technology.

What do you like most about programming?

I always try to find the best solution. I am a creative IT guy with a passion for detail.

What kind of server-side experience do you have?

I am used to setting up and managing servers in data centers and in the cloud. I have more than 15 years of experience with Linux-based systems (especially Debian and Ubuntu). I have been using the AWS Cloud since 2018 and I hold several AWS certifications.

Do you have experience with content management systems?

Yes, I have been developing websites with WordPress since 2016. I have gained insight into running single WordPress installations as well as multisites. I also have experience in managing multilingual sites and running sites powered by the WooCommerce eCommerce plugin. My knowledge goes far beyond using WordPress and customizing its frontend: my expertise includes expert-level knowledge of theme setups, child themes, creating and patching plugins, versioning, CI pipelines, user management, hosting and security.
