DeepSeek and open-source AI for business in Germany

With open-source AI for business, the first question is which of your data may reach which model. As an IT expert for data platforms, I help companies in Germany choose between the DeepSeek app, the DeepSeek API and open weights on servers they control, and I set up the way that fits. I take on freelance and interim engagements, remote first, with on-site days in Frankfurt Rhine-Main. Book a 30-minute video call. We look at your task, and you find out whether I can help.

What your company gets

  • Experience with sensitive data

For more than twenty years I have built and run systems in finance, e-commerce and real estate that hold customer and market data. I decide with you which of your data a model may see.

  • One answer per task

You learn for each task whether the DeepSeek API, a hosted copy of the weights or your own server fits. A public press release and a customer file get different answers.

  • A second supplier

Your applications speak one API format, and the model behind it can change. DeepSeek's API accepts the OpenAI and the Anthropic format, and vLLM serves open weights in the OpenAI format.

  • Rules outside the model

My agents run on Claude and Codex under one rule file. Rules and memory live outside the model, so DeepSeek or another open-weight model can take a cloud model's place.

  • Servers and failover

I have run servers in data centers in Germany and the United States and systems on AWS, Azure and Google Cloud. At a Frankfurt fintech I moved the infrastructure to another cloud with failover.

What the DeepSeek decision is about

DeepSeek is an AI company from China, and your company can use its models in four ways. Each way sends your text to a different place, so the choice decides who can read your prompts and documents.

The app and the API send every request to DeepSeek. The open weights of a model such as DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash run where you install them: at a hosting provider under your contract or on your own server. The model family stays the same. The path of your data changes.

Four ways to use DeepSeek, checked in September 2026

Open-source AI as a second supplier

Most companies in Germany buy their AI from a few US vendors. In a Bitkom survey published on September 9, 2026, 76 percent of the companies that use AI named ChatGPT, 35 percent Microsoft Copilot and 28 percent Gemini. Bitkom President Ralf Wintergerst said that German companies rely almost entirely on AI applications from the USA (Bitkom).

An open-weight model gives you a second supplier. Your applications keep one API format, and the model behind the address can change: a cloud model for the hard tasks, DeepSeek or another open-weight model where the test shows it is good enough. If a vendor raises its prices or changes its terms, you change the address and keep the application.

DeepSeek Harness, a developer preview

DeepSeek also publishes DeepSeek Harness, software that runs AI agents. It is under the MIT license and runs on Node.js, and each of its parts is a plugin. InfoQ reported on August 20, 2026, that it can switch between remote API providers and local model servers (GitHub, InfoQ). The GitHub page calls it a developer preview and warns of changes that break compatibility. Until a stable release, the harness belongs in a test environment.

What I set up for your company

Most of the work happens around the model:

  • a list of your tasks with the data each one touches, sorted by what may leave the company,
  • a test set of your own tasks, run against the cloud model you use today and against DeepSeek,
  • one API address per application, so a model can change without new code,
  • agents that follow written rules and reach your systems with the rights of a new colleague.

Who I am

I am Michael Wutzke, an IT expert for data platforms in Frankfurt. I have worked more than twenty years from code to CIO in finance, e-commerce and real estate, with cloud platforms and data centers. Today AI agents speed up how I build and transform data platforms.

In client work I rebuild a platform with Claude and Codex under one rule file. The rules and the memory of the agents stay outside the model. An open-weight model such as DeepSeek can take a cloud model’s place in that setup. I have run blockchain nodes in several data centers.

From the first question to a model in use

  1. Video call

In 30 minutes we talk about the tasks you want to give to a model and the data those tasks touch.

  2. Assessment together

We sort your tasks by their data: public, internal, personal or confidential. Each group gets one of the four ways to use DeepSeek, or stays with the model you use today.

  3. Quote and order

You receive a quote for the way we chose. The work starts once you accept it.

  4. Comparison test

Your staff run their own tasks through the cloud model they use today and through DeepSeek. The results show where the open model is good enough.

  5. Setup

I set up the chosen way, an API account, a hosting contract or your own server, with one address per application.

  6. Handover

Your team receives the list of tasks and data, the documentation of the setup and a date to check licenses and terms again.

Questions companies ask

Is DeepSeek GDPR compliant?

I give no legal advice. On June 27, 2025, the Berlin data protection commissioner reported the DeepSeek app to Apple and Google as illegal content. DeepSeek had not shown that the data of German users is protected in China at a level equal to the EU. The report concerns the app. For the API and for open weights, your data protection officer decides.

Where do our prompts go when we use the DeepSeek API?

To DeepSeek's servers. DeepSeek's privacy policy, updated on February 10, 2026, says that the company collects, processes and stores personal data in the People's Republic of China. For the comparison test I prepare texts without personal data.

May we use DeepSeek's open weights commercially?

The model page of DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash names the MIT license, which permits commercial use. The license covers the weights. Where the model runs and which data it sees remain your decision.

Should we use DeepSeek Harness?

In a test environment, yes. DeepSeek calls it a developer preview and announces changes that break compatibility. My agents in client work run on Claude and Codex, and their rules live in files outside the harness.

Which engagements do you take on?

Freelance and interim engagements, part time or full time, remote first. I live in Frankfurt and come on site in Frankfurt Rhine-Main or where your servers stand.
