What a fractional CIO does in your company

A fractional CIO is the head of your IT for a fixed share of the month. In that time the IT lead decides what your company buys, who runs it and what it may cost, and reports to the management.

Job profiles of the German IT-Leiter list the tasks: the operation of network, servers, cloud services and workplaces, IT security with emergency plans, the business applications, the IT budget, the providers and the team (profiling-institut.de, noba-experts.de). A smaller company has these tasks too, and a full-time position for them may not pay off. A part-time lead takes them on for the days you book, while your provider and your staff keep the daily work.

What I have answered for, newest first

• Since April 2026: AI Engineer in Platform Transformation. I set the limits for the AI coding agents at a client: they get the rights of a new colleague, and a person confirms changes to production. Details: AI agents under the same rules as humans.
• 2022 to October 2024: at the Frankfurt-based company Blocksize Capital, Head of Decentralized Finance and Node Operations, then Chief Information Officer from January 2023. I answered for the IT budget and the management of information technology, and I led business-critical teams. I moved the infrastructure from Azure to another cloud with a failover site.
• 2016 to December 2021: Project Manager and Web Developer at Policen Direkt. I ran the group’s web portals and their AWS setup in Frankfurt and London, and by December 2021 I had managed more than 100 top-level domains.
• 2011 to 2016: Project Lead and Developer at Valentins (Burda Digital), with online shops for Lidl and REWE.

Who I am

I am Michael Wutzke from Frankfurt. I have worked in IT and media for more than twenty years, as developer, project lead, IT Team Lead, Managing Director and CIO.
