Business Development Manager in Germany

I am Michael Wutzke from Frankfurt, and I take on permanent positions as Business Development Manager in Germany, remote for the most part, with on-site days in Frankfurt Rhine-Main. Freelance and interim engagements are possible as well. I look for the customers and partners your product needs and write the business case with your product team. When a partner asks how the systems connect, I can answer myself. Let's talk about your needs in a free 30-minute video call.

What I bring to your team

  • Business development experience

For more than twenty years I have built digital products for finance, insurance and online retail. I start an opportunity with what the customer or partner needs and question a business case the product cannot deliver.

  • Customers in finance

At a Frankfurt fintech I spoke with decision-makers at stock exchanges and banks and onboarded institutional customers with their cooperation partners. I helped write the terms and price definitions of that product.

  • Technical background

I designed the interfaces of an insurance portal and connected online shops to PayPal, WorldPay and Amazon Pay. I can discuss a partner integration with the partner's IT team myself.

  • Network in finance

I have relationships with banks, asset managers, technology providers and industry associations. At the events of the Frankfurt community Finance Loop, with more than 4,000 members, I meet people from fintech and banking.

  • Concept and rollout

I wrote the concept of a real-time market data product, designed its product marketing and led its rollout. A business case I take to your product team comes from someone who has built a product himself.

What a Business Development Manager does

A Business Development Manager finds new business for a company and prepares it until a customer or partner signs. The ads I read on September 24, 2026 add the business case: the manager works out whether an opportunity pays and takes it to the product team.

The ad of Mesago, a trade fair organizer of the Messe Frankfurt group, asks for new target groups in B2B and product concepts with business cases. A digital bank in Frankfurt wants partnerships with IT and data providers. Hays calls the position no entry-level job and asks for experience in development, marketing or sales.

For a smaller company or a Mittelstand firm, the manager level means work on the opportunities themselves: the first talk, the case, the contract draft and the onboarding. I have done that part of business development myself, in finance, insurance and online retail.

Business Development Manager, Sales Manager and Head of Business Development

The three titles overlap in many ads. They differ in what each one owns. The table sets them side by side, from job profiles and ads I read on September 24, 2026.

My work fits the first column. I wrote the concept and the business documents of a product, spoke with decision-makers and onboarded customers with their partners. As CIO I also coordinated a sales team, which belongs to the third column.

My business development work by industry, newest first

My evidence lies in three industries: finance, insurance and online retail. The finance rows cover my positions at the Frankfurt-based company Blocksize Capital.

Who I am

I am Michael Wutzke. I have worked in IT and media for more than twenty years, and I came to business development from the product side. Before I presented a market data product to banks, I had written its concept and coordinated the teams that built it. At Valentins I was the IT link between management and marketing, and as CIO part of my job was to describe technically complex matters in simple words. I am also interested in open-source AI models that a company runs on its own servers.

In Frankfurt I meet people from fintech and banking at the events of Finance Loop, the community that grew out of the Frankfurt Blockchain Meetup. Details: Growth and business development advisory.

How we get in touch

  1. Message or call

Write to me on LinkedIn or book a 30-minute video call. The job ad or a few lines on the product and the market it should reach are enough.

  2. Video call

We go through the opportunities you see, the teams I would work with and the engagement: permanent, freelance or interim.

  3. Documents

The pages on the market data product and on my CIO position describe the business development work in detail. Certificates follow on request.

  4. Meeting your team

I meet your sales and product teams on site in Frankfurt Rhine-Main or travel to your office in Germany.

Questions companies ask

Which engagements do you take on?

I support companies as a freelancer or as a permanent employee. As Business Development Manager in Germany I work remote for the most part, with on-site days in Frankfurt Rhine-Main. Interim business development work, part time or full time, is possible as well.

What does BDM mean?

BDM is short for Business Development Manager; some ads write BD Manager. The manager finds and prepares new business. A Head of Business Development leads the team that does this work.

What is the difference between business development and sales?

Sales sells the current offer and looks after the customers who buy it. Business development opens what the company does not have yet, such as a new customer group or a partner, and writes the business case for it. Hays describes the two jobs as overlapping.

In which industries does your experience lie?

Finance, insurance and online retail. In finance I worked with stock exchanges, banks and institutional customers of a market data product. In insurance I built the web portals of a company in the life insurance market, and in retail I built shops for Lidl and REWE with their payment connections.

Can you answer a partner's technical questions?

Yes. I helped write the methodologies for the API endpoints of a data product, designed the interfaces of a contract management portal and connected it to an existing CRM system. As CIO I coordinated the development and infrastructure teams.
