Startup consulting in Munich for funded fintech and insurtech startups

I advise funded fintech and insurtech startups in Munich on the step after the round: which market or partner comes next, and whether the technology can carry it. With colleagues I built a digital insurance manager in which customers order products of external partners, and I led the rollout of a market data product for institutional users. You can bring me in for the expansion or as CTO, freelance, interim or permanent. Let's talk about your needs in a free 30-minute video call.

What I take care of for your startup

  • Experience with finance and insurance products

For more than twenty years I have built digital products, from online shops to insurance portals. For an insurtech I plan from two sides: the policyholder who uses the product and the insurer who has to accept it.

  • Partner products in one portal

With colleagues at a Frankfurt company in the life insurance market I built a portal in which thousands of customers (count from 2016 to 2021) manage their policies and order products of external partners. I connected it to the existing CRM.

  • A market launch with banks

I wrote the concept of a market data product for digital assets, coordinated four teams through the rollout and spoke with decision-makers at stock exchanges and banks myself. I onboarded its institutional customers.

  • Documents partners sign

I helped write terms, price definitions and license agreements, and created the legal framework of a partner program. A partner's lawyers read such documents before the first deal.

  • Germany, Austria and Switzerland

I advise finance companies in the three countries and work in German and English. From Frankfurt I travel to Munich for on-site days.

Startup consulting after the round

A funded fintech or insurtech has a product that works for its first customers and a round that pays for the next step. That step is a new country, a new customer group, or a partner who sells the product, such as an insurer or a bank. Each of them changes the product and the contracts.

In 2025 the Munich region received more venture capital than Berlin: 2.7 billion euros, against 2.4 billion euros in the Berlin metropolitan area (Startup-Verband, Bayern Monitor 2026, 2026-03-17). The InsurTech Hub Munich counts more than 200 startups in its community.

What I have done in finance and insurance

At the Frankfurt-based company Blocksize Capital I was Head of Decentralized Finance and Node Operations and then Chief Information Officer. I wrote the concept of a real-time market data product for digital assets, led its rollout and onboarded institutional and professional customers with their cooperation partners. Details: Real-time market data for digital assets.

At Policen Direkt in Frankfurt I was Project Manager and Web Developer. With colleagues I built a digital insurance manager in which thousands of customers (count from 2016 to 2021) upload and manage their policies and order products of external partners. I programmed its Angular front end, designed the interfaces and connected the existing CRM. Details: A digital insurance manager on AWS.

Ten questions before a funded startup enters a new market

I go through these questions with a startup before it commits people and budget to a new market or partner. A question without an answer becomes the first task of the plan.

  1. Who buys in the new market, and who else has to approve the purchase, such as a compliance team or an insurer’s product board?
  2. Which partner sells or distributes the product there, and what does the partner earn?
  3. Which documents does the partner read before signing: terms, price definitions, license agreements, a description of how the product calculates its values?
  4. Does the product need a license or a regulated partner in the new market? A lawyer answers this one; the plan names who asks.
  5. Which language do the product, the support and the contract need?
  6. Which payment methods do customers there expect?
  7. Where must the data be stored, and does the cloud setup allow a second region?
  8. Which interface does the partner’s system expect, and who builds the connection?
  9. Who in the team talks to the first customers there?
  10. Which numbers decide after the first months whether the market works?

Questions 3, 6 and 7 come from my own work: the partner documents of the market data product, the connections of online shops for Lidl and REWE to PayPal, WorldPay and Amazon Pay, and insurance portals run in the AWS regions Frankfurt and London.

Who I am

I am Michael Wutzke, and I live in Frankfurt. I write about digital assets as an editor at the business magazine Business Punk, and I have published articles in German in Der Bank Blog and in IHK-Magazin. I hold a technical diploma in mechanical engineering, and I am interested in open-source AI models that a company runs on its own servers. Details: Career stages.

How an engagement runs

  1. Free video call

Thirty minutes on your product and the market or partner you plan next.

  2. Assessment together

We go through the ten questions on this page and mark which answers exist. Then you see whether you need expansion work, a CTO or both.

  3. Quote or contract

Freelance and interim work gets a quote; a permanent position gets a contract. The work starts with your signature.

  4. Plan for one market

I write the plan for one market or partner at a time: the buyers, the partners, the documents they need and what the product has to change.

  5. Talks and build

I lead the talks with partners, draft the partner documents with your lawyers and plan the product changes with your developers.

Questions companies ask

What does your startup consulting cover?

Two things: the expansion of a funded startup into a new market or partner channel, and the technology behind it, up to the CTO position. Legal and tax advice stay with your lawyers and tax advisers.

Do you know the insurance market?

Yes. I was Project Manager and Web Developer at a Frankfurt company in the German secondary market for life insurance. With colleagues I built the insurance manager, and for the life insurance portals I worked directly with the chief actuary.

Can you take the CTO position instead?

Yes. As CIO of a Frankfurt fintech I coordinated development, infrastructure, product and sales and was responsible for the budgets. For a global real estate database I was CTO and programmed the websites and databases myself.

Munich has its own insurtech programs. Where do you fit in?

Programs such as the InsurTech Hub Munich connect startups with insurers. I work inside the startup: I prepare the product, the documents and the team for the partner talks that such programs lead to.

Do you work on site in Munich?

Yes, for workshops, partner meetings and planning days. I live in Frankfurt and work remote the rest of the time; I have no office in Munich.
