AI engineer in Frankfurt Rhine-Main

I am Michael Wutzke, an AI engineer in Frankfurt. I build software with existing models such as Claude and Codex, and I connect those models to your systems through APIs and MCP servers. I support companies as a freelancer or as a permanent employee, also in interim projects, remote for the most part with on-site days in Frankfurt Rhine-Main. Let's talk about your needs in a free 30-minute video call.

What I add to your team

  • Experience with software and its users

For more than twenty years I have built software for the people who use it. As an AI engineer I start with the task a colleague or customer wants done, then choose the model and tools.

  • Agents in a production codebase

With Claude and Codex I help a client break up a monolithic application. The project has more than 300 RESTful API endpoints and more than 8,000 commits.

  • MCP servers

An MCP server gives a model such as Claude tools for one of your systems, with the rights you set. I build these servers and teach how to build them at Claude Hacker House.

  • Limits that hold

An agent I set up reads your database but cannot write to it, and its key cannot push to the production branch. A person confirms each change to live data.

  • Leadership

As CIO of a Frankfurt fintech I led business-critical teams. I hold a training authorization from IHK Frankfurt for two IT apprenticeships, application development and system integration.

  • Based in Frankfurt

I live in Frankfurt and reach offices in Darmstadt, Mainz or Bad Homburg for on-site days. Meetings run in German or English.

What an AI engineer does

An AI engineer builds software on models that already exist. Chip Huyen defines AI engineering as “the process of building applications with readily available foundation models” (AI Engineering, O’Reilly, 2025). A lab such as Anthropic or OpenAI trains the model, and the AI engineer connects it to a company’s systems and decides what it may do there.

AI engineer, ML engineer or software engineer

Job ads mix these titles, and each one means different work. The table shows what each role builds and which part of it I cover.

RoleWhat the role buildsMy part
AI engineerSoftware on existing models: agents, tools, MCP servers and the checks around themMy daily work
ML engineerIts own models, trained on the company’s data and run in productionNot my field; I do not train models
Data scientistAnalyses and statistical models that answer business questionsNot my field
Software engineerCode for a product, with or without a modelI write code as well, from APIs to web portals
Forward deployed engineerSolutions inside one customer’s organization. Gergely Orosz describes engineers who “embed with customers” and “co-develop solutions” (The Pragmatic Engineer, August 12, 2025)Close to my client work, where I build inside one client’s systems
AI architectThe design of how models, data and systems fit togetherPart of my work as IT architect in Frankfurt

What I build with Claude and Codex

Most of my AI engineering today happens in one client engagement, on an information platform built with AI agents. These are the parts I set up there:

  • Parallel sessions. Several sessions of Claude and Codex and the human team work in one repository at the same time, each session in its own git worktree.
  • Hooks with tests. A hook blocks a dangerous command before it runs, and a test matrix proves that it lets valid work through.
  • A gateway for Claude on a phone. The control plane of the agent team speaks MCP over stdio only. I put an OAuth gateway, built with FastMCP, in front of it, so Claude on a phone reads and writes the team’s issues.
  • A team of agents with roles. On Paperclip a chief agent hands each task to one agent of its team, and each code agent opens a merge request under its own name.
  • A gate before code changes. An agent changes code only after it has queried a knowledge graph of the repository for the part it touches.

The rules behind this setup are on AI agents under the same rules as humans.

Who I am

I am Michael Wutzke. I have built software for more than twenty years, from online shops to insurance portals on AWS, and today I build it with AI agents such as Claude and Codex. I am also interested in open-source AI models that a company runs on its own servers. Earlier I was Head of Decentralized Finance and Node Operations, then Chief Information Officer, at the Frankfurt-based company Blocksize Capital. I hold the AWS Solutions Architect Associate certificate and take part in Claude Certified Architect Foundations, the first official certification program of Anthropic. From the first call to the first day

  1. Free video call

In 30 minutes we talk about what your team wants to build on AI models and which engagement fits: permanent, freelance or interim.

  2. Technical interview

Your developers ask about my work with agents, APIs and MCP servers, in a conversation or at a shared screen.

  3. Reading ahead

My positions stand on the career page. The work with agents is described on the pages linked below, so your developers can read it before the interview.

  4. First days on site

I start with your team on site in Frankfurt Rhine-Main to learn the systems and the people, then work remote for the most part.

Questions companies ask

Which engagements do you take on?

Permanent positions as AI engineer, remote for the most part with on-site days in Frankfurt Rhine-Main, and freelance or interim projects, part time or full time.

Do you train models?

No. I build on existing models such as Claude and Codex. Training a model on your own data is the work of an ML engineer, and the table on this page compares the two. An open-weight model on a server of your own is covered on Self-hosted LLMs such as DeepSeek.

Which technologies do you work with?

Claude, Codex and the Gemini CLI as coding agents under one rule file; MCP servers and an OAuth gateway built with FastMCP; Paperclip as a control plane for agents with roles. Around them PHP, Python, Node.js and REST APIs with OpenAPI, Git with protected branches, Docker and GitLab CI.

How does an AI engineer differ from an AI expert?

An AI engineer builds the software. An AI expert also decides with management where AI helps the company and teaches the staff to use it. That side is on AI expert for your team in Germany.

Where do you work?

From Frankfurt, remote for the most part. On-site days take me to Frankfurt, Mainz, Wiesbaden, Darmstadt, Offenbach, Eschborn, Bad Homburg and Hanau.
