Budget and responsibility
As CIO of a Frankfurt fintech I held the IT budget and the disciplinary lead of business-critical teams, with procuration. My earlier leadership roles were IT Team Lead and Managing Director.

Servers, cloud and failover
I have installed servers, switches and firewalls in data centers and run AWS, Azure and Google Cloud. I moved an infrastructure from Azure to another cloud with a failover site.

Providers and data protection
For more than 15 years I have written and reviewed IT contracts and license agreements. I have documented and implemented data protection measures under the GDPR.

Apprentices and new staff
I hold a training authorization from IHK Frankfurt for two IT apprenticeships. New IT staff start with an onboarding plan, and leavers hand over before their last day.

Based in Frankfurt
I live in Frankfurt, so offices in Eschborn, Offenbach, Bad Homburg, Mainz or Wiesbaden are a short trip for on-site days. I work in German and English.

My positions, newest first
- Since April 2026: AI Engineer in Platform Transformation. With Claude and Codex I help a client split a monolithic application.
- 2022 to October 2024: Head of Decentralized Finance and Node Operations at the Frankfurt-based company Blocksize Capital, then Chief Information Officer from January 2023, with procuration from May 2023.
- 2016 to December 2021: Project Manager and Web Developer at Policen Direkt, with the web portals of the group and their AWS setup.
- 2011 to 2016: Project Lead and Developer at Valentins (Burda Digital), with online shops for Lidl and REWE.

Who I am
I am Michael Wutzke. I have worked in IT and media for more than twenty years, as an employee and as a consultant. Besides my client work I teach at Claude Hacker House and write about digital assets as an Editor at Business Punk. Do you take on the position permanently?
Yes, as described at the top of this page. For a vacancy that needs bridging first, I work as interim IT director, and freelance engagements are possible too.
Head of IT or CIO: which title fits?
In many German mid-sized companies both titles cover the same work. A CIO more often sits on the executive board and owns the part IT plays in the company strategy. I have held the CIO title and work under either.
Which parts of IT have you run yourself?
Debian and Ubuntu servers; servers, switches, firewalls and backup systems in data centers in Germany and the United States; AWS, Azure and Google Cloud; Docker; monitoring with error notifications; customer portals connected to a CRM.
How many days a week on site?
We agree on that in the first conversation. Since I live in Frankfurt, on-site days in the region need no overnight stay.
Do you use AI in IT operations?
Yes, with limits. At a client I set up AI coding agents whose credentials cannot push to the production branch, and a person confirms each production change. I use Claude and Codex daily.
