Conversion rate optimization consultant for company websites in Germany
Your website gets visitors, and too few of them send an inquiry. I measure where they drop out between the first page and the contact, change that step and test the change against the current version. Each page then leads a visitor to one next step: a call, a quote request or a message. Let's talk about your needs in a free 30-minute video call.
What I take care of for you
-
Conversion experience
I have built websites and shops that customers buy and inquire through, and I read them from the visitor's side. Your prospects' questions decide what each page answers first.
-
Numbers before changes
I set up tracking for each step toward an inquiry with Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager, and I hold the Google Analytics certification. You see where visitors leave before anything changes.
-
Tested changes
A change goes live after it has beaten the current version in an A/B test. When it loses, you learn why, and the next test starts from that.
-
Funnels I programmed
I programmed order funnels and payment connections for shops of Lidl and REWE and worked on their conversion rates. An inquiry form follows the same logic with fewer fields.
-
Content that brings visitors
As editor in chief of an information portal on Frankfurt's skyline I reached more than one million readers a year (count from 2017 to January 2024). I write pages that answer the question a visitor came with.
-
Based in Frankfurt
I work remote for companies across Germany and meet you on site in Frankfurt Rhine-Main. I work in German and English.
Why visits do not turn into inquiries
A company website loses inquiries at points you can measure, most often on the entry page and in the contact form. Conversion optimization finds the point and changes it. It helps the visitors who came for your offer. When the wrong visitors arrive, the fix lies in the pages and ads that bring them.
B2B buyers add one more hurdle. A visitor who reads three pages and leaves may be comparing providers for a colleague, and the first step you can offer that visitor is smaller than a quote request.
The inquiry path audit
The table is the audit I run on a company website. Each row is one stage of the path to an inquiry, with the number I measure there, a common leak and the change I test first. Go through it with your own analytics before our call: the row where your numbers drop is the place to start.
| Stage | What I measure | Common leak | Change I test |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entry page | Visitors who leave without a second page, per entry page | The first screen describes the firm, and the visitor’s problem comes later | The first screen names the service, the region and the next step |
| Service page | Scroll depth and clicks on the call to action | The call to action sits at the bottom only | The next step at the top and at the end |
| Evidence | Clicks on cases and references | Claims with no proof near them | A dated case next to each claim |
| Contact page | Visits to the contact page against sent forms | Many required fields, a mandatory phone number | Only the fields a first reply needs |
| Form | Errors and exits per field | An error appears after sending, and the input is gone | Errors shown next to the field, input kept |
| Phone | Conversion rate on phones against desktops | Buttons and fields too small for a thumb | A form and a call button built for the phone |
What I did in shops, and what carries over
At Valentins, then part of Burda Digital, I programmed shopping carts, order funnels and dedicated mobile shops, among them shops for Lidl and REWE, and I worked on their conversion rates next to the programming. My page on conversion optimization quotes the result on mobile devices:
I managed to increase the sales of a top eCommerce brand by up to 22% on mobile devices through changes to the funnels.
An inquiry form is a short funnel. The rules I applied in the shops hold for it: the visitor sees the next step without scrolling, and the form asks only for what the first reply needs. I test a change in the five steps described on Conversion optimization: research, hypothesis, prioritization, test and learning.
Who I am
I am Michael Wutzke, a web developer and IT architect in Frankfurt with more than twenty years in IT and media. At Valentins I was the IT link between management and marketing, the two sides a conversion project brings together. I hold the Google Analytics and the Google Mobile Sites certifications. Details: Experienced in conversion optimization.
How a conversion project runs
-
Free video call
In 30 minutes we look at your website, your inquiry numbers and what a good lead is for your sales team.
-
Review of the inquiry path
We go through the path from the entry pages to the sent form together and check which steps your analytics measures today.
-
Quote and order
After the review you get a quote. When you accept it, the work starts.
-
Measurement
I add the tracking that is missing and collect data until the numbers show where visitors drop out.
-
Hypotheses and tests
For each leak I write down why visitors leave and which change could keep them. The change with the best odds runs first, as an A/B test.
-
Rollout and next test
The winning version goes live on your site. A losing version shows what your visitors do not respond to, and that shapes the next hypothesis.
Questions companies ask
How soon do we see results?
That depends on your traffic. A test needs enough visitors in both versions to show a difference, so a site with few visits needs more time per test. After the review I can tell you how many tests your traffic supports.
What counts as a conversion on a B2B website?
The inquiry, the call booking and the quote request are macro conversions. A download, a newsletter sign-up or a visit to the page with your prices are micro conversions, the first steps of visitors not yet ready to talk. I measure both, because the micro steps show where the path breaks.
Do you need access to our Google Analytics?
Read access to begin with. For missing tracking I need rights in Google Tag Manager, or a developer on your side who adds the tags. In Germany most tracking needs the visitor's consent, so I also look at how many visitors your consent banner loses.
Can you change the website yourself?
Yes. I am a web developer and change templates, forms and pages myself, in WordPress or in the code of a custom site. If your IT maintains the site, I hand over each change as a written specification and check it after the release.
Which tools do you use?
Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager for the measurement. Google Optimize, the tool I used for A/B tests, was switched off in 2023, so we pick the testing tool together, to fit your site and your consent setup.
Do you work on site?
I live in Frankfurt and meet clients on site in Frankfurt Rhine-Main. Most of the work runs remote, for firms across Germany. I take on conversion optimization as freelance projects, in German and English.
