What a Head of Blockchain decides

A Head of Blockchain or Head of Web3 decides where a blockchain fits the company’s products and leads the people who build and run it. Job ads ask for the architecture and rollout of solutions on public and private chains, and for advice to management on blockchain business models and partnerships. From 2022 I did this work at the Frankfurt-based company Blocksize Capital, first as Head of Decentralized Finance and Node Operations, then as Chief Information Officer.

Public chain, private ledger or no chain

The first question in a blockchain project is whether it needs a chain at all. The table sums up how I answer it, and each row names the case it comes from.

My blockchain work, newest first

• Since January 2026: Editor at Business Punk, writing on digital assets, blockchains and crypto investing.
• May 2024: expert member of the Product Advisory Committee of the Digital Token Identifier Foundation.
• January 2023 to October 2024: Chief Information Officer at Blocksize Capital. I coordinated the development, infrastructure, product and sales teams.
• 2022: Head of Decentralized Finance and Node Operations, responsible for blockchain infrastructure in several data centers. I passed the Certified Bitcoin Professional and the Certified DeFi Expert exams.
• Since 2015: Bitcoin miners and blockchain nodes of my own. I’m still running nodes today.

Who I am

I am Michael Wutzke. I have worked in IT and media for more than twenty years. I have attended more than 250 blockchain events, from large conferences to local meetups, and I met Cardano’s creator Charles Hoskinson at Paris Blockchain Week 2025. I teach myself blockchain programming to understand what each chain is good for. I build software with Claude and Codex and am interested in open-source AI models that a company runs on its own servers. My view of the field is on Working with blockchains.
